DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME! SPRING AHEAD!

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time (DST) will be extended in the United States. DST will start on March 11, 2007, which is three weeks earlier than usual, and it will end on November 4, 2007, which is one week later than usual. This is causing quite a problem with computers, which are accustomed to the later time change. Watch your PCs after Sunday to see if the time changed on it’s own. If you use electronic calendars, this problem will likely also effect them.
Ode to the Block Featuresubmitted by meganeilis
There is a highly underrated and under appreciated feature on the Nest, one that many of us should take advantage of. Tired of the ferberites and the anti-CIOers bickering? Simply look up the offending Nesties screen names, and click the little checkmark next to their name. **Poof** They're gone. One Nestie constantly riding your ass for no particular reason **poof** never to be heard from again. Sick of hearing about how BM is best **click** no more boob nazis. Chances are, whoever you're blocking will be glad not to hear from you too.
So the next time you get into an argument with a Nestie for the 589th time, consider the block option. Where else in your life can you make a source of stress disappear with the click of a button?

Nestie Book Review
Sellevision by Augusten Burroughs

Augusten Burroughs, author of Running with Scissors scores again with the hysterical and dark novel, Sellevision.

This is a perfect book for the beach or long car ride; but only if you want something that isn’t a romance or overly sappy. Sellevision is loosely based on Pennsylvania’s QVC and quickly absorbs the reader into a world of over-the-top greed, semi-“D-list” celebrities, soap opera lifestyles and the strange world of home shopping networks.
The characters do not fail to entertain. Max loses his Sellevision job when he accidentally exposes his penis to hundreds of viewers during a TV segment aimed at kids – and now has to search for a new job. Peggy Jean, a popular Sellevision seller and lover of perfection and Xanax, is being stalked and is told by her stalker that she is overly hairy. Bebe, a star host and serious shopaholic, tells her adoring public all about the boyfriend she met over the Internet. And Leigh – well, she’s banging the boss – but he’ll get divorced one of these days, won’t he? Then maybe she’ll get to host during Sellevision’s prime time hours…

This book shines like a two-carat Diamonelle ring for only three payments of $39.99 – only three payments! Well, actually it is about $13.00 at your local Border’s – either way you don’t want to miss it!

JOKE OF THE DAY
The Mommy Test
I was out walking with my 4 yr old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and start to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that. " Why?" my daughter asked. "Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably had germs" I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Mommy, how do you know all the stuff? You are so smart.“I was thinking quickly. " All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test, You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy." We walked along in silence for 2 to 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. "OH... I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy." "Exactly" I replied back with a big smile on my face.

Preeeclompsia Awareness by beckyc
Preeclampsia is the most common pregnancy complication, the leading known cause of prematurity- with no known cause, no known cure and no one- until now- fighting to end it. Every year, over 6.6 million women have pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and over 67,000 of these women die. The Preeclampsia Foundation is dedicated to funding research, raising awareness, and providing support and education to those impacted by preeclampsia, HELLP Syndrome, and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

The Preeclampsia Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Federal Tax i.d.# 91-2073087 is holding it's 3rd annual nationwide walk-a-thon at different sites around the country on Saturday, May 12th, 2007. The California walk will take place in San Diego at Lake Miramar in the community of Scripps Ranch on this morning.

It's our first walk in San Diego. It would mean so much to us if you would join us in support of the families who have experienced preeclampsia, and for the future generations who will. Preeclampsia can run in families in the same way high cholesterol and heart disease do.

If you aren't able to make it to the walk, there are still several ways that you can help.

- You can make a donation (many employers will now match donations like these; please check with yours)

- You can have an event like a garage sale (many communities now have annual ones) and donate the profits in advance of the walk as your show of support

- You can help us secure sponsors for the walk to cover the cost of the t-shirts, site rental, and filing fees, and the rest will go directly to the Preeclampsia Foundation

- You can pass this information on to your friends and family, places of business, gyms, mommy & me classes, playgroups, sports leagues, grocery stores, preschools, religious organizations, service organizations, doctor and dentist offices, community gathering places, etc. and request the "save the date" flyer be posted

Walk-a-thon registration forms will be available online very soon. Please contact Becky Sloan at 858-483-1229 for donation information if you are unable to attend a walk and for more information go to: http://www.preeclampsia.org/
SLEEP TRAINING BY By CryptoCrystallin

Welcome to installment #3--Employing a Winding-Down Routine!By now, you probably have a good idea about your baby's temperament, what activites are more stimulating to them and those that are relaxing, and a good sense of their general sleep 'schedule.' This week we're going to discuss some ways you can help your baby wind down from an active period to a restful one that will be most conducive for falling asleep. All babies are different. Some require only a few minutes of winding down before they're ready to sleep, while others need to be gently transitioned over a longer period of time before they're relaxed enough to fall asleep. In creating your baby's sleep schedule, you'll want to take into account the amount of time they'll need to wind down--at least 10-15 minutes before you expect they'll fall asleep. It's also a good idea to be flexible regarding different sleep sessions--you may find that your baby is more tired before their morning nap, and more stimulated before their afternoon nap. You can vary your winding down routine slightly based on what you've learned about your own personal baby. Your approach here is designed to promote relaxation, remove stimulating sights, sounds, and actions, and 'set the stage' for your baby to fall asleep without your direct intervention. Here are some things to consider when creating a winding-down routine: --moving from one room, where active play takes place, to the room where the baby will be sleeping. This will help your baby identify the difference in location means a change in activity. They will come to associate your winding down routine with going to sleep. --dim the lights. Clearly, bright light doesn't promote sleep, but a darkened room is very calm and not very stimulating.--soft music, no television, white noise (there are machines you can buy or you can just use a fan.) --no strong smells, but maybe your baby will find the scent of, say, lavender relaxing.--the room should be a comfortable temperature, neither too hot or too cold. Both extremes make it difficult to comfortably relax.
You'll also want to pay close attention to your own behavior during the winding-down routine. You can continue to cuddle, rock, nurse, and otherwise provide the usual physical comfort to your baby, but to make the distinction between active interaction and a more calming influence (which your baby will associate with going to sleep, just like the change of locations) consider: --keeping your voice low and soothing--not engaging in 'stimulating' touch: no tickling, for example.--making all your movements slow and deliberate. Remember, your baby is watching you and your cues can determine their responses.
An example of a winding-down routine from my own experience when Jasper was about 4-5 months old was something like this:I would bring Jasper upstairs to his room. While holding him, I would sing softly while closing the shades on his windows. When the room was dim, I would change his diaper, put his clothes back on, and turn on the fan I used for white noise and to drown out any noises in other parts of the house. Then we'd sit in a chair by his crib and I'd feed him, burp him, and gently lay him down in the crib. After I put on the fan, I stopped talking or singing...and when he was in the crib, I turned on his classical music CD. I would then leave the room. I'm sure some of these suggestions seem obvious, right? Well, they are! but I think it's considering them all at once--covering all bases--that's difficult to think about when you're actually trying to do it. :) The idea here is to focus on beginning to teach your baby how to fall asleep on their own--and as you can see, the way to do that is to provide a lot of assistance! Now, if you're feeling confident and believe that your winding-down routine has resulted in a baby who's ready to sleep, go ahead and see what happens when you put your baby in their crib (or other sleeping location, the one you use for ALL sleep as much as possible.) If you're not ready for that yet, or your baby is still younger than 4-6 months, continue soothing them until they're asleep for now! The overriding theory here is that by doing all this work now, you're preparing your baby (and yourself) for great sleep habits that will continue over the long term. Doesn't that sound great? Next week we'll talk about the next step: Self-soothing, fussing, and CIO.

Oven Spaghetti
By Karen&Phil

1 lb. ground beef
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can tomato soup
1 can water
4 oz. can mushrooms
1/2 lb. spaghetti
2 c. shredded mozz. cheese
1/2 c. ketchup

Preheat oven to 350. Cook spaghetti, brown and drain ground beef, adding onion the last 5 or so minutes of cooking. Mix soups, water, mushrooms, and ketchup in 9x13 baking dish. Add spaghetti and meat, combine well. Sprinkle cheese on top.

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, covered. This recipe is also good when made ahead of time, you can bake it when needed! Just be sure to add a bit more water if it will be waiting in the fridge to be baked later.
Breakfast Pizza
By Karen&Phil

1 tube mild breakfast sausage
1 tube refrigerated pizza dough (or make your own)
1 can pizza sauce (but I don't use quite the whole can)
2 c. shredded mozz. or cheddar cheese
your favorite breakfast-y toppings- scrambled eggs, peppers, mushrooms, cooked bacon, etc.

Preheat oven to 375. Cook and drain sausage, prepare your other toppings. Grease pan, spread dough. Prebake dough until just slightly brown. Spread sauce, sausage, and other toppings on dough, top with cheese. Bake about 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted. You can also use biscuit dough instead of pizza dough if you prefer.
Banana Pancake Coinsby Curlybride04
BananasYour favorite pancake batter

Simply slice a banana into coins, dip and cover with pancake mix, cook on griddle or pan as you would a pancake.
This is a great for babies just starting out with finger food and even picky toddlers!

Tim Saving Tips

• Spray a small amount of your favorite perfume or cologne on a light bulb before turning it on. When the bulb heats up, your fragrance will drift through the room.
•If you’re trying to save money, put all of your change into a jar or piggy bank. You’ll be surprised at how fast it adds up. Use this if trying to save up for a special occasion or to get that newest gadget.
•Mix equal parts Vaseline with your baby’s bum cream (I use Penaten). It will make that expensive but needed cream last longer.

Tax Tips by BVHCPA
Tax RETURN = the form you file with the government.
Tax REFUND = the amt you may or may not receive after filing a tax return.
Please note the difference.

A quick and dirty lesson on the difference between filing status and withholding status: Your filing status is a statutory decision made by the IRS - you are either Single, Head of Household or Married. If you are Married, you have the choice of filing Married, Joint or Married, Separate. You must file in the appropriate category - no exceptions. Your withholding status is determined entirely by you. You may choose any of a hundred different options, from Single and 0 to Married and 12. It is even perfectly legal to have $0 withheld from your pay, as long as you withhold and remit the Social Security and Medicare that is required. Your withholding status relates only to the amount of Federal Income Tax withheld (and sometimes your State Income Tax withheld, depending on your state). Generally, the lower the number of exemptions you claim (i.e. 0), the more is withheld and the less you take home. Conversely, the higher the number of exemptions you claim (i.e. 12), the less is withheld and the more you take home. It is generally advisable to stick with a "reasonable" estimate of the actual number of exemptions you have. For example, I claim Married, 2. Because of our tax situation, I will not increase it to Married, 3 when Cousin It comes. Each person is different - do not ask a stranger on the internet to decide for you.

Miscellaneous State Tax Credits filed under the weird and bizarre:
Michigan - Still Birth Credit - up to $150 for each still birth born to you during 2006, for which you have a copy of the Certificate of Stillbirth from your County Health Department

Georgia - Driver Education Credit - up to $150 for any person completing a Driver Education Course. Courses completed in conjunction with a high school do not qualify.

Arizona - up to $5,000 of Arizona lottery winnings are exempt from income tax, subject to limits on your Gambling Loss deduction.

Should I really get that 1,000 count box of diapers?
As a general rule (if you have a chunky/skinny baby, you may need to adjust up or down accordingly), you can use the following guidelines for disposables:
Size 1: Up to 12 lbs
Size 2: Up to 16 lbs
Size 3: Up to 22 lbs (you may want to try size 4 for overnights)
Size 4: Up to 26 lbs (a chubby 20 lb’er was in this size; however)
Size 5 & 6: Up to 34 lbs, depending on size of child. 2T pull-ups were also used

Misc. Comments
Many did not like Pampers Baby Dry, but raved about the Swaddlers version
The biggest complaint was that diapers had no “stretch” to the tabs or that the diapers themselves weren’t soft enough
The second biggest complaint was diapers leaking, followed by “quality of diapers” and then “the smell” the diapers had either before or after DC filled the diaper up.

5 point harness for car seats up to 80 lbs., have you heard of this?
Submitted by: michelcreek
Just saw this news story on Houston local news and wonder if it's already been discussed. A story about how booster seats are not as safe as a harness seat for kids over 40 lbs., however these harness seats are not readily available. Anyways, more of a fyi if you're interested in more info. http://kyledavidmiller.memory-of.com/
PRAYER REQUESTS
HappilyWedMama – Prayer for her grandmother who is moving into her house next week - pray that she does well living on her own. (she has lived with them for almost 2 years since her dh of over 50 years passed away - they were in the process of building this house together and it is now done.)Happy Scrappy – Prayers for her cousin who lost one of her twins (the boy) in utero at 23 weeks. The Drs want to induce her because of the risk of infection to the second baby but she is refusing. She wants to save her baby girl. They are only giving her 20% chance of survival at this point.
Sparky – Prayers for her cousin who just found out she has a tumor on her pituitary. She is having it removed in April, but it is a large tumor so they don't think they can remove the whole thing. Also, it is a risky surgery with several possible complications. She has a 4-yr-old and a 2-yr-old. So, we need prayers that she makes it through the surgery and the tumor can be removed.Tanzer13 – Prayers for her DS who is having a liver biopsy on 2/28.Karen&Phil – Prayers for her mom,wjo having a hip replacement next Wednesday the 28th. Her hip is so bad that the bone is chipping and she can hardly walk. She's excited to get it done, but very scared!
Dolphinfsg – Prayer to her family as her brother passed away suddenly in October from sleep apnea at the age of 27. His birthday is coming up and her family is going to need some support. slm27z – Prayers for her grandma is going through a really rough time, mentally, since the death of my grandfather 1 year ago. At her last psychologist appointment they told her if she does not gain or at least maintain her current weight, she will be hospitalized. Lisita6 – Expecting twin boys - one baby had a cyst on his brain - fairly common and expected to go away but we hope its sooner than later. U/S on 2/28 – send prayers please!

TODDLER TIPS BY BELL4KP
Things are really changing in your house right now, your growing toddler is starting to show she or he has a mind of their own and it is time to start enforcing a lot of those rules you and your dh have talked about so much. The new thing in my house is Kalie Rose demanding what she wants, rather than asking nicely. For example, when she wants her blanket she will tell me. "Mommy, get my blanket" while it is cute the first few times you can imagine what a problem this could grow into as she gets older. We have decided as a family, that when she does this that we will get down on her level and look into her sweet face, and say that Mommy or Daddy can not understand her when she talks like that and that it is not nice to demand for someone to get something for you, that when she can ask us nicely and say please we will get what she wants. We then ask her if she has something to ask us. Yes, the first few times we had to say “Kalie, you need to say, Mommy Please go get my blanket for me". Well to my surprise this afternoon she did not demand us to get her blanket she asked nicely the first time. It took several days of us doing the above routine when she would demand something and now she is doing it on her own. Yes it takes time and it may be easier to laugh about how cute it is that she is being so prissy, but really do you want a prissy five or six year old.

Toys, Toys and more Toys
If your house is anything like mine you have more toys than you know what to do with. We actually rotate our toys, do not keep the same ones in sight at all times. This helps with boredom and so many other things. The big problem when babies become toddlers is teaching them to clean up after themselves. I have found that singing the clean up song works wonders in getting them to participate in cleaning up. We are also teaching them that before they can bring out a different toy, they have to pick up what we were playing with. This has been a battle in my house and one we are still struggling with. I will update you on the progress and with what did and did not work for us. Right now I simply say that if they want to play with the little people toys that we must pick up the train first and I start picking up the train. They sometimes help pick it up, but for the most part they are busy trying to get to the little people toys. So wish me luck on this one.

Ear Tubes and infections
What a scary thing to learn that your baby and or toddler has to have tubes in their ears. It is a surgery and your child will have to be put under, but it is also a simple surgery and well worth the visit to the hospital. Kalie Rose had hers put in in November of last year, and it was not soon enough for me. She had two back to back ear infections that lead to one trip to the ER with a 105 degree temperature. That was it for me, I knew it was time to get the tubes for her ears. The first apt with them ENT was uneventful, he did a hearing test, and checked her ears. The next thing I knew we had the appointment set for the trip to the hospital. The surgery was set for 6:00 in the morning, we got to the hospital at 5:00 and before we knew it we were in a room full of toys that keep her busy and her mind off of not drinking anything. I actually think that is the hardest part of all of it, knowing how to deal with not letting the baby eat or drink that morning. What every you do, do not say the word sippy cup, bottle, juice or milk in front of them and be kind and not eat or drink in front of them either. They took her back right at 6:00 to the OR and I got to go with her, she also got to take her blanket. I held the mask over her face as she went to sleep and was escorted out of the room for the surgery. I walked back to the first room we were in then we were taken to PICU, where they recover. I did not have time to sit down before they were wheeling her into the room, where she woke up in my arms. She was groggy and scared but she did great. We stayed in the hospital for about 30 to 45 more minutes then we headed home. By the time we got to the house she was our normal happy two year old. You would have had no idea that she had surgery that morning. The best news, she got a bad cold in December and did not get an ear infection and she is now talking in complete sentences. While this is a very scary thing for you, just know that the doctors do this everyday and they know what they are doing. Hang in there and be sure you are doing what is best for your dear child.
SLEEP TRAINING BY CYPTOCRYSTALLIN
Sleep training Step 2: learning your baby's cues!!

This step is, in many ways, the most difficult part of sleep training. It would be more accurate to call it Parent Training, because you're training yourself to recognize and then respond to your baby's cues. Since every baby is different, learning your baby's particular behaviors will be hugely beneficial when you begin sleep training. I also believe this will help make the creation of a sleep routine much easier for both you and your baby!

Many experts feel that a baby begins to develop the ability to sleep for extended periods of time after they're about 3 months old. They're also more likely to start (to some extent) a recognizable, regular sleep/wake schedule that relates to the clock--meaning they begin to tend toward sleeping at night and being alert during the day. As their alertness increases, so does their need for restful, restorative sleep. In very much the same way that you fuel their energy for waking hours with food and/or milk or formula, good sleep fuels your baby.

Over the course of a day, observe your baby's behavior, reactions, interactions, and physical movement. It can be helpful to keep track of the time. You've probably been doing this since your baby was born, noting when you're feeding and changing them, and now you can add to this by paying attention to the length of time your baby is awake before they become tired. On average, it's about 2-3 hours of wakefulness before a period of sleep is needed....but don't be too concerned with exact times or lengths of time just yet.
How do you know if your baby's tired? It seems obvious in some ways--your baby is tired when they're rubbing their eyes, yawning, or becoming cranky--but there are other signs of tiredness as well that might not be as clear. Some babies become less interactive when they're tired. You may notice that at some point, your baby is less engaged with you, seems 'disinterested' in playing, or even turns away from you or the stimulating activity. Some babies, when they're sleepy, begin to cry or appear distressed by activities that were previously enjoyable for them. In older babies, you might note that they've stopped crawling, cruising, or cooing. Some babies become listless while others appear 'wound up' or hyperactive. You're also looking for patterns: does your baby seem to get sleepy at around the same times each day? Does your baby's mood or need for sleep change dramatically depending on your activities? Do they get tired right after they eat or after you've done tummy time? What activities are more stimulating and which seem to calm or soothe them? How about the people your baby spends time with--is your baby more tired after spending an hour with Daddy or with you? Once you become aware of your baby's cues, you'll be able to start working on your winding-down routine, which will help your baby transition from active wakefulness to restful sleep. Until next time, good luck learning about your baby! (I'll collect everyone's notes next week.) :)

Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop by Nows MrsB (Jenn Baur)
Looking for something new and different for a birthday party, scout troop, daycare center or other group activity?! Check out Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop!! Noah’s Ark is a traveling Fluff-n-Stuff Workshop that comes to your door. No more treks to the mall with a group of kids, and everything associated with that-I’m a mom…I know what’s associated-crowds, kids begging for extra things, trying to get all the kids there and home, permission slips if it’s a school or scouting event, etc., etc. With Noah’s Ark, the party hostess decides what animals, outfits, etc, she wants at her party and that’s what the crew member brings. And because Noah’s Ark doesn’t have to pay mall rent, prices are more reasonable than that mall store where kids make their own stuffed animal. J

Anyway, I joined Noah’s Ark last year and love it! I never thought I could get into any of the home party businesses because I’m just not pushy. But when my sister joined, I checked it out and thought it was cool. What I especially love is that I can just do workshops with kids at birthdays, daycares, etc. and NEVER have to do a home party show (think Pampered Chef, etc) if I don’t want. I went to my 1st leadership rally in Chicago in January and LOVED it! It was great fun meeting other crew members and seeing the upcoming products that Noah’s Ark is introducing.

If you want more information about Noah’s Ark, either to host a party or possibly become a crew member, check out my website at http://www.mamabsbears.com/. You can also email me at MamaBsBears@verizon.net with any questions. If the crew member aspect interests you, now is the time to check it out because Noah’s Ark is offering a promotional starter kit for $29 through March 16, 2007-it has all the basic tools you’d need to get your business started, including leads to daycares in your area and contact postcards. The normal kit is $129 (a $219 value) and is still available and has a lot more items for starting your business. If you sign up during the promotional period with either kit, you have the opportunity to earn a 3 day, 2 night trip. If you are interested in a party/workshop, and aren’t in my area, I can put you in touch with a local crew member.

I didn’t even mention the other great lines that Noah’s Ark recently introduced: Bella Bee Workshop (a traveling glamour girl workshop for the ‘Tween set that promotes one of 4 values: Truth & Honesty, Self-Esteem & Self-Confidence, Compassion & Caring, or the Value of Friendship), the new Noah Baby Collectors Club that will start shipping later this spring, Noah’s Birthday Club or the Noah to Goah kits that you can order online and have shipped directly to a loved one. So check out the website, and let your friends know-it is growing around the country, and it was another mom like us that started the business when she was looking for fun, new birthday ideas for her own kids.

Chili Blanca
By misseltoe

2-3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cans Great Northern Beans
1 can Shoe peg corn (Green Giant)
7-10 jalapeno slices, finely diced
1 can chicken broth (optional)

Boil chicken breast in just enough water to cover until fully cooked (about 20 min.). Tear apart into about licorice-sized strands (you can cut them but I prefer tearing), and return to water in pan. Add both cans of beans (do not drain), then drain and add corn. Stir gently as the beans tend to break apart. Simmer, now add half of jalapenos and taste. Add the rest if desired, or add even more depending on your desired heat factor. If chili is too thick add some chicken broth. Simmer around 30 minutes after the last jalapenos are added and serve. I serve mine topped w/ sour cream and shredded cheese and with cornbread. You could top w/ salsa, tortilla strips, guacamole, etc. Makes 3-4 hearty servings
Caramel Apple Cheesecake BarsBy justus4

2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup sugar, plus 2 tablespoons, divided 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Streusel topping, recipe follows 1/2 cup caramel topping

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a medium bowl, combine flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture is crumbly. Press evenly into a 13 by 9 by 2-inch baking pan lined with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Bake 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar in an electric mixer at medium speed until smooth. Then add eggs, 1 at a time, and vanilla. Stir to combine. Pour over warm crust.
In a small bowl, stir together chopped apples, remaining 2 tablespoons sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spoon evenly over cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle evenly with Streusel topping. Bake 30 minutes, or until filling is set. Drizzle with caramel topping.

Streusel Topping: 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup quick cooking oats 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
In a small bowl, combine all ingredients.
Espresso Toffee Fudge
By justus4
Butter-flavored cooking spray
1 stick butter
4 cups sugar
(12-ounce) can evaporated milk
2 tablespoons instant espresso powder ( I used Cafe Vienna powder from General foods)
1 (12-ounce) package semisweet chocolate chips
30 large marshmallows
3/4 cup toffee bits

Lightly coat 9 by 13-inch baking pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, sugar, evaporated milk, and espresso powder. Stirring constantly, bring to a rolling boil for 10 minutes (you have to follow the timing directions on this or the fudge will not set) Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips and marshmallows until blended. Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle toffee chips evenly over fudge and pat lightly. Cool until set, about 3 to 4 hours. Cut into bite-sized squares.

CREATIVE VALENTINE IDEASby Michael Webb, Founder http://www.TheRomantic.com/

Sleep under the stars
Buy some glow in the dark stars from the toy department and arrange a special message above your bed.

Their very own coloring book
Draw a dozen or so silly pictures of memorable experiences (browse through photo albums for ideas). Outline in black marker and then have the pages copied and bound on heavy paper at a copy shop. Give with a pack of crayons.

Computer romance
Change the screen saver on the computer to a scrolling message. For added effect, use a wingding or character font that can't be read without decoding.

Got milk?
Hide a bunch of silly prizes and a card in your love's favorite cereal.

Jump start the romance
Tie your card or gift on a three foot string and tie it to the bottom of an automatic garage door. When your honey comes home, the gift will magically arise to greet them.

Warm the heart
While your love is in the shower, put their towel in the dryer for a few minutes so it will be toasty warm when he or she steps out.

Music to their ears
In your own voice, record a book, fairy tale or poetry on tape for your dearest to listen to on the way to work or while he or she is out of town.

A winter picnic
Move the living room furniture and have a picnic in the middle of the floor complete with blanket, picnic basket and all the fixings (in front of a roaring fireplace would add to the effect).

Send a mail bomb
Sending a card can be explodingly romantic just by adding something unexpected: a feather, leaf, matches, lock of your hair, pressed flower or your handkerchief scented with perfume/cologne.

Mirror, mirror on the wall
Use Rain-X Anti Fog (used to keep car windows from fogging up) and a cotton swab to write a message that will mysteriously appear on the bathroom mirror while your sweetheart is showering. Or put that old tube of lipstick to good use with a good morning greeting on the mirror.

Cooking Tips by SandraChelle

• When using a cookbook, make sure to add notes about the recipe. How it turned out, if you used a substitution, what you would do differently next time, etc.

• Devote an entire drawer to one thing – baking supplies, cutting utensils, take-out menus, etc. When you are looking for a particular item, you'll know right where to go.

• Use a toothpick while sewing. Place the toothpick between the fabric and the button. The extra space will keep from sewing the button on too tightly.

**If you have a tip to share, please SandraChelle on the nest or email: darceylou@hotmail.com**

Congenital Heart Defect Fact Sheet
Sometimes during early pregnancy, a baby's heart fails to form properly, resulting in structural abnormalities known as Congenital Heart Defects. Although some defects are genetic, in many cases the cause is unknown.
It is estimated that 40,000 babies with Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) are born in the United States each year. More than 1 million American children and adults with Congenital Heart Defects and Childhood Onset Heart Disease are alive today.*
CHD is the most frequently occurring birth defect, and is the leading cause of birth-defect related deaths.
Although some babies will be diagnosed at birth, sometimes the diagnosis is not made until days, weeks, months, or even years after. In some cases, CHDs are not detected until adolescence or adulthood.
Some CHDs may not require treatment other than periodic visits to a Pediatric Cardiologist. Others can be treated with medications or repaired with surgery and/or procedures. Complex defects may require several surgeries and are never really "cured".
Many cases of sudden cardiac death in young athletes are caused by undiagnosed CHDs and Childhood Onset Heart Disease.

UPDATE FROM LAST NEWSLETTER
Directly from KnotLisa:

“Hi everyone - Recently I've seen a lot of talk on the boards about our new baby site and I just wanted to give you the scoop. We have been hard at work on a site for moms and moms-to-be and we'll be launching a site called "The Nest Baby" soon. It will be its own site at http://www.thenestbaby.com/ (not anything else you might have heard - right now this url takes you to our baby shop) as well as a link off The Nest. We'll have lots of message boards and reviews of all the local baby resources in your area. (You may also have heard that we recently acquired Lila Guides, kind of a Zagat guide or City search for baby stuff - this is true and very exciting!). You'll be able to search for resources and write your own reviews of your favorite places. We'll also have community photo galleries that you can upload baby pics, belly pics, nurseries and more. In addition, we'd love to hear exactly what you want to see in a baby site - so send us your thoughts. thenestbaby@thenest.com
Hidden BoardsYou can access the hidden boards by going into any board, like Parenting, and then changing the forum ID in your web browser.

Potty Training

1. Make sure you have three days to focus on potty training and nothing else - you will have a greater success at getting it accomplished faster.

2. Start out first thing in the morning talking to your little one about going potty. Put big boy/girl pants on him or her and get all excited about them being so grown up now. Be sure to encourage them not to pee-pee on Spiderman or whoever is on the underpants.

3. Before you get them dressed, say “Okay lets go potty.” Take them to the bathroom with you. First you sit on the potty and then have them sit on the potty. If they go great if not, it is not a big deal, yet.

4. After breakfast take them to the bathroom again, and repeat taking them every thirty minutes.
Do this for the first two days, on day three no longer take them every 30 minutes and just start asking if they need to go. Again always emphasize to them not to pee-pee or poo-poo on the big boy/girl underpants.

These tips have worked for me, however we have not made it through the night yet.
Moving to a big boy or big girl bed

Have your child go with you to pick out the bed and/or the bedding. Give them two to choices and let them pick the one they like.

When you are driving home, explain to them that it is time to go to a big boy and or big girl bed and that now they get to sleep in a bed just like mommy and daddy. Have them help make up the new bed and show them it is not scary at all.

At night, leave a night light on and follow your normal night time routine. Many parents put a gate up at the door to prevent the child from coming out of their room at night. After discussing it with the fire department we decided to turn the locks around and lock the door to the bedroom (hey they suggested it!) We never missed a beat on the night time routine and they went right to sleep, even at nap time.

Welcome to the sleep training section of your newsletter! This week we're going to talk about getting ready for sleep training.

If you are considering using this method, I suggest that you do some exhaustive research (no pun intended, I swear) first, in advance of actually trying it with your baby. One of the most important aspects of any successful sleep training method is preparedness. You know how you're not supposed to go food shopping when you're hungry, because then you make poor food choices? In much the same way, I think that attempting to begin sleep training without a clear understanding of the method, and a carefully thought-out approach--when you're incredibly sleep-deprived and desperate for a solution--can lead to negative outcomes for you and your baby.

In addition, because there's a lot of misinformation, or incomplete information, flying around about sleep training, moms may not really know what it entails or whether it's the right approach for them and their babies. On any given day, I see the question "What is CIO" on the nest. Depending on who answers the question, the poster comes away with very different ideas about what it is! The goal of this month's article is to provide everyone with some direction so you can all answer these questions for yourselves.

Here are some books that you might want to read that address, in great detail, the subject of sleep training. These are three of the books I read, and I found them all helpful. It can get overwhelming to read TOO much on any one subject, so I'm providing this short list as a guide to what you may decide should be further reading. My favorite is the first:

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbuth, MD
Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems by Richard Ferber, MD
Sleeping Through the Night by Jodi Mindell, MD

These books can help you understand why you might be a proponent of sleep training, what's involved, how to prepare, and the various techniques you can use to help your child sleep better. In future newsletters, I'll get into more detail about each step and ways to make the method work for you!

There are other books on the subject of infant and toddler sleep issues as well which do not promote CIO or sleep training in the "traditional" sense. These are not books whose advice we followed with our son, but I thought I would include the "top three" to provide a balanced presentation, and because I'm a geek who reads a lot. It might be helpful for you moms who are on the fence about sleep training, or aren't sure of the different approaches out there that can help your baby get more sleep, to see the differences between the various methods.

The No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley and William Sears, MD
Nighttime Parenting: How to get your baby and child to sleep by William Sears, MD
Good Night Sleep Tight by Kim West and Joanne Kenen

I'll be honest: the last book was pretty good. I liked that the author (who, btw, is a social worker like me) talks about the prevention of sleep problems and not just how to remedy already-existing issues. What you'll find, as I did, is that there is a very long continuum between "letting your baby cry until she barfs" and "holding your baby 24 hours a day until YOU barf." I am certain that somewhere between both extremes is a method for helping your baby sleep that will work well for your family.
Until next time, happy reading, and please don't hesitate to email me or nestie newsletter with specific questions if you think I can help!

Q: I’m exercising three days per week and eating 1300 calories a day. Why aren’t I losing weight?

A: Well, depending on how tall you are, how much you weigh, and the intensity of your exercise, you may be eating TOO LITTLE! Your body may very well believe it’s starving and won’t let you lose any more weight out of survival mode. Let look at these equations:
Just to be able to breathe, get out of bed, etc.
10 x (Ideal Body Weight) = Basal Metabolic Rate
10 x 140 = 1400

Now add in your daily activities:
3 (sedentary lifestyle) x IBW
5 (moderate activity) x IBW 5 x 140 = 700
10 (strenuous: running 45 minutes, four times per week) x IBW

Add those two figures: 1400+700= 2100 (to MAINTAIN current weight)
Now to lose a pound per week, subtract 500 calories.

That’s 1600 calories you should be consuming daily to LOSE WEIGHT.

If you find that this number of calories seems high and would cause a weight gain, your metabolic rate may have decreased because of chronic dieting, frequent weight fluctuations, or fasting.
Mommies-to-Be: NEVER DIET WHEN YOU ARE PREGNANT!
Check with your OB/GYN before starting any exercise program.
Walking and swimming are great, low-impact activities to keep you in shape during your pregnancy. Prenatal yoga is also another good choice. Other exercises which are generally considered safe, but which may require modifications by your doctor, are jogging, running, and weight lifting.

PLEASE REMEMBER: If you experience any dizziness, shortness of breath, bleeding, or contractions you should stop exercising IMMEDIATELY and contact your doctor at once!

Veggie Pizza
By Karamac15

(2 packs) Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
(2) 8oz cream cheese blocks (I like fat free)
1 cup low-fat/no-fat mayo
1 packet of ranch dressing (powder)
Assorted veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, green pepper, red pepper, onion, carrots, tomatoes, etc.)
Shredded cheddar cheese

Spread out crescent rolls in pan. Just fill a cookie sheet with the two packs. This is your pizza crust. Bake according to instructions, once done, let it cool
Combine cream cheese, mayo and ranch dressing. Spread the mixture on the cooled crescent rolls. Add cut up veggies on top (may want to press into mixture to make sure to stay on!) Add shredded cheese on top. Enjoy!
