DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME! SPRING AHEAD!

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time (DST) will be extended in the United States. DST will start on March 11, 2007, which is three weeks earlier than usual, and it will end on November 4, 2007, which is one week later than usual. This is causing quite a problem with computers, which are accustomed to the later time change. Watch your PCs after Sunday to see if the time changed on it’s own. If you use electronic calendars, this problem will likely also effect them.
Ode to the Block Featuresubmitted by meganeilis
There is a highly underrated and under appreciated feature on the Nest, one that many of us should take advantage of. Tired of the ferberites and the anti-CIOers bickering? Simply look up the offending Nesties screen names, and click the little checkmark next to their name. **Poof** They're gone. One Nestie constantly riding your ass for no particular reason **poof** never to be heard from again. Sick of hearing about how BM is best **click** no more boob nazis. Chances are, whoever you're blocking will be glad not to hear from you too.
So the next time you get into an argument with a Nestie for the 589th time, consider the block option. Where else in your life can you make a source of stress disappear with the click of a button?

Nestie Book Review
Sellevision by Augusten Burroughs

Augusten Burroughs, author of Running with Scissors scores again with the hysterical and dark novel, Sellevision.

This is a perfect book for the beach or long car ride; but only if you want something that isn’t a romance or overly sappy. Sellevision is loosely based on Pennsylvania’s QVC and quickly absorbs the reader into a world of over-the-top greed, semi-“D-list” celebrities, soap opera lifestyles and the strange world of home shopping networks.
The characters do not fail to entertain. Max loses his Sellevision job when he accidentally exposes his penis to hundreds of viewers during a TV segment aimed at kids – and now has to search for a new job. Peggy Jean, a popular Sellevision seller and lover of perfection and Xanax, is being stalked and is told by her stalker that she is overly hairy. Bebe, a star host and serious shopaholic, tells her adoring public all about the boyfriend she met over the Internet. And Leigh – well, she’s banging the boss – but he’ll get divorced one of these days, won’t he? Then maybe she’ll get to host during Sellevision’s prime time hours…

This book shines like a two-carat Diamonelle ring for only three payments of $39.99 – only three payments! Well, actually it is about $13.00 at your local Border’s – either way you don’t want to miss it!

It’s hard to pick up a book to read when we have precious little time to spare – so isn’t it better to read one that you have “heard” good things about? We’re looking for volunteers to send in a review of a book that they’ve read recently. The reviews will be included in upcoming newsletters for other nesties to read. This way, we can see what others think of a book and decide whether we want to read it! If you have a review you’d like to submit, send it to nestienewsletter@yahoo.com.

JOKE OF THE DAY
The Mommy Test
I was out walking with my 4 yr old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and start to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that. " Why?" my daughter asked. "Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably had germs" I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Mommy, how do you know all the stuff? You are so smart.“I was thinking quickly. " All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test, You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy." We walked along in silence for 2 to 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new information. "OH... I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy." "Exactly" I replied back with a big smile on my face.

Preeeclompsia Awareness by beckyc
Preeclampsia is the most common pregnancy complication, the leading known cause of prematurity- with no known cause, no known cure and no one- until now- fighting to end it. Every year, over 6.6 million women have pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and over 67,000 of these women die. The Preeclampsia Foundation is dedicated to funding research, raising awareness, and providing support and education to those impacted by preeclampsia, HELLP Syndrome, and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

The Preeclampsia Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Federal Tax i.d.# 91-2073087 is holding it's 3rd annual nationwide walk-a-thon at different sites around the country on Saturday, May 12th, 2007. The California walk will take place in San Diego at Lake Miramar in the community of Scripps Ranch on this morning.

It's our first walk in San Diego. It would mean so much to us if you would join us in support of the families who have experienced preeclampsia, and for the future generations who will. Preeclampsia can run in families in the same way high cholesterol and heart disease do.

If you aren't able to make it to the walk, there are still several ways that you can help.

- You can make a donation (many employers will now match donations like these; please check with yours)

- You can have an event like a garage sale (many communities now have annual ones) and donate the profits in advance of the walk as your show of support

- You can help us secure sponsors for the walk to cover the cost of the t-shirts, site rental, and filing fees, and the rest will go directly to the Preeclampsia Foundation

- You can pass this information on to your friends and family, places of business, gyms, mommy & me classes, playgroups, sports leagues, grocery stores, preschools, religious organizations, service organizations, doctor and dentist offices, community gathering places, etc. and request the "save the date" flyer be posted

Walk-a-thon registration forms will be available online very soon. Please contact Becky Sloan at 858-483-1229 for donation information if you are unable to attend a walk and for more information go to: http://www.preeclampsia.org/
SLEEP TRAINING BY By CryptoCrystallin

Welcome to installment #3--Employing a Winding-Down Routine!By now, you probably have a good idea about your baby's temperament, what activites are more stimulating to them and those that are relaxing, and a good sense of their general sleep 'schedule.' This week we're going to discuss some ways you can help your baby wind down from an active period to a restful one that will be most conducive for falling asleep. All babies are different. Some require only a few minutes of winding down before they're ready to sleep, while others need to be gently transitioned over a longer period of time before they're relaxed enough to fall asleep. In creating your baby's sleep schedule, you'll want to take into account the amount of time they'll need to wind down--at least 10-15 minutes before you expect they'll fall asleep. It's also a good idea to be flexible regarding different sleep sessions--you may find that your baby is more tired before their morning nap, and more stimulated before their afternoon nap. You can vary your winding down routine slightly based on what you've learned about your own personal baby. Your approach here is designed to promote relaxation, remove stimulating sights, sounds, and actions, and 'set the stage' for your baby to fall asleep without your direct intervention. Here are some things to consider when creating a winding-down routine: --moving from one room, where active play takes place, to the room where the baby will be sleeping. This will help your baby identify the difference in location means a change in activity. They will come to associate your winding down routine with going to sleep. --dim the lights. Clearly, bright light doesn't promote sleep, but a darkened room is very calm and not very stimulating.--soft music, no television, white noise (there are machines you can buy or you can just use a fan.) --no strong smells, but maybe your baby will find the scent of, say, lavender relaxing.--the room should be a comfortable temperature, neither too hot or too cold. Both extremes make it difficult to comfortably relax.
You'll also want to pay close attention to your own behavior during the winding-down routine. You can continue to cuddle, rock, nurse, and otherwise provide the usual physical comfort to your baby, but to make the distinction between active interaction and a more calming influence (which your baby will associate with going to sleep, just like the change of locations) consider: --keeping your voice low and soothing--not engaging in 'stimulating' touch: no tickling, for example.--making all your movements slow and deliberate. Remember, your baby is watching you and your cues can determine their responses.
An example of a winding-down routine from my own experience when Jasper was about 4-5 months old was something like this:I would bring Jasper upstairs to his room. While holding him, I would sing softly while closing the shades on his windows. When the room was dim, I would change his diaper, put his clothes back on, and turn on the fan I used for white noise and to drown out any noises in other parts of the house. Then we'd sit in a chair by his crib and I'd feed him, burp him, and gently lay him down in the crib. After I put on the fan, I stopped talking or singing...and when he was in the crib, I turned on his classical music CD. I would then leave the room. I'm sure some of these suggestions seem obvious, right? Well, they are! but I think it's considering them all at once--covering all bases--that's difficult to think about when you're actually trying to do it. :) The idea here is to focus on beginning to teach your baby how to fall asleep on their own--and as you can see, the way to do that is to provide a lot of assistance! Now, if you're feeling confident and believe that your winding-down routine has resulted in a baby who's ready to sleep, go ahead and see what happens when you put your baby in their crib (or other sleeping location, the one you use for ALL sleep as much as possible.) If you're not ready for that yet, or your baby is still younger than 4-6 months, continue soothing them until they're asleep for now! The overriding theory here is that by doing all this work now, you're preparing your baby (and yourself) for great sleep habits that will continue over the long term. Doesn't that sound great? Next week we'll talk about the next step: Self-soothing, fussing, and CIO.

Oven Spaghetti
By Karen&Phil

1 lb. ground beef
1/2 small onion, chopped
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can tomato soup
1 can water
4 oz. can mushrooms
1/2 lb. spaghetti
2 c. shredded mozz. cheese
1/2 c. ketchup

Preheat oven to 350. Cook spaghetti, brown and drain ground beef, adding onion the last 5 or so minutes of cooking. Mix soups, water, mushrooms, and ketchup in 9x13 baking dish. Add spaghetti and meat, combine well. Sprinkle cheese on top.

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, covered. This recipe is also good when made ahead of time, you can bake it when needed! Just be sure to add a bit more water if it will be waiting in the fridge to be baked later.
Breakfast Pizza
By Karen&Phil

1 tube mild breakfast sausage
1 tube refrigerated pizza dough (or make your own)
1 can pizza sauce (but I don't use quite the whole can)
2 c. shredded mozz. or cheddar cheese
your favorite breakfast-y toppings- scrambled eggs, peppers, mushrooms, cooked bacon, etc.

Preheat oven to 375. Cook and drain sausage, prepare your other toppings. Grease pan, spread dough. Prebake dough until just slightly brown. Spread sauce, sausage, and other toppings on dough, top with cheese. Bake about 15-20 minutes or until cheese is melted. You can also use biscuit dough instead of pizza dough if you prefer.
Banana Pancake Coinsby Curlybride04
BananasYour favorite pancake batter

Simply slice a banana into coins, dip and cover with pancake mix, cook on griddle or pan as you would a pancake.
This is a great for babies just starting out with finger food and even picky toddlers!
